Wear
top designer goods without maxing out
9 Apr 2012
These are the women who frequent Town Center at Boca Raton on a weekly and sometimes daily basis. They are first on the waiting list for new, limited-edition handbags at Louis Vuitton and the same women who get phoned or e-mailed in advance of the Neiman Marcus designer shoe sale. I only know this not because I was ever rich, but simply because I was once in debt trying to keep up with women like this.
It all started with a credit card for Saks Fifth Avenue, which I opened to purchase a Prada travel bag, and then I needed a Chloé bag from Bloomingdale's (opened another card), a Ralph Lauren evening gown from Macy's (open another card) and a Marc Jacobs denim satchel from Neiman Marcus.
I always had the best intentions of tightening my Gucci belt and paying the balances down, but then new fashions would come out for the month and I'd just end up spending more. That coupled with 23 percent interest rates, and I quickly found myself in a sea of designer label-induced debt, treading water in my slippery-soled Chanel pumps.
It took me about a month to get into designer debt and 10 long years to get out of it. But thank God, I was able to get out of it. I only have one credit card now and that's how I plan to keep it. I was able to recoup some of my money through consigning.
I began visiting consignment shops on Saturdays from Palm Beach to South Beach, trying to sell off some of my wackier purchases, which over the years has included a Gucci motorcycle helmet and a hideously flashy pair of D&G pants with scenes of Venice, Italy painted all over the legs. What the heck was I thinking?
Anyway, here's a fun, fabulous way to wear labels without overdrawing your checking account and having to end up on TV with Suze Orman.
